What Difference do our Projects make?
Using a Theory of Change to plan and assess Changes

 

This training provides you with a clear conceptual overview and very practical guidance on the different steps involved in setting up a Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) plan for your project that captures CHANGE!

We will design a Theory of Change as a starting point for anticipating and assessing changes (in people’s behaviour, skills, knowledge, institutional changes, etc.) and will use these ‘areas of change’ for setting up our MEAL plan. We will reflect on good indicators and learn a wide range of participatory and interactive tools and methods to assess these.

 

How is the course structure? 

The training consists of two half days of live interactive online sessions, plus individual and group work. Total time commitment over the period of the course is up to 14 hours:

  • 1 hour pre-reading/pre-training survey
  • 11 hours of live online sessions
  • 1-2 hours of self-paced activities (intersession task)

You will work in breakout rooms, use case studies and co-create documents.

  • Comparing and contrasting a Theory of Change and a Logframe
  • Building an outcomes pathway – the ‘heartpiece’ of a Theory of Change
  • Linking the Theory of Change to a MEAL plan

  • Clarifying the terms M&E/MEL/MEAL
  • Logframe and Theory of Change: Differences and commonalities
  • Examples of a Theory of Change
  • The ‘heartpieces’ of a Theory of Change – outcomes pathways and assumptions
  • Group activity: building a Theory of Change

Intersession task: Completing the Theory of Change (can be done individually)

 

Day 2 26 November 2021, 09:00am – 14:30 CET

  • Linking the Theory of Change to a MEAL plan
  • Defining indicators
  • Introducing a range of (participatory) tools & methods for assessing change
  • Group and individual activities


Where does the training take place?

The training takes place online via zoom. All you need is a stable Internet connection. You will also have access to the training recording for 30 days following the training.


How much does it cost?

Who is it for?

This training is for people working in development cooperation with some experience of M&E, who want a deeper understanding of how to use a Theory of Change model as a basis for planning and systematically assessing changes. You need some basic knowledge of the Logframe.
