Creating a Theory of Change

In development practice, we are all familiar with logic models (like Logframes) that visualize a project in terms of resources, activities, short and long-term outcomes. While these are useful tools, we all know that for social change to happen, we need to be more specific about goals and about the conditions needed to reach them. This is where the theory of change (ToC) comes into play, as it illustrates how and why a desired change is expected to happen in a particular context by mapping out the ‘missing middle’ between a project’s activities and the desired goals.
This training course will therefore zoom in and unravel the ‘intervention logic’ we are so used to when developing Logframes. Participants will develop a ToC and map it out through various stages. This includes backward mapping, identifying basic assumptions about the context, identifying causal pathways, developing indicators to measure outcomes and writing a narrative to explain the logic of the project or programme.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to develop a ToC and draw a visual representation of their theory. They will also be able to describe the similarities and differences between a ToC and other logic models.
Topics to be covered:
- The big picture: ToC and its role in project/programme planning and evaluation
- ToC in relation to other models (logic models, Logframes, results chains)
- Developing your ToC (collecting theory of change data: engaging with stakeholders)
- Visualising your ToC and quality check
Participants will leave the training with a case study that they have worked on.
We offer this course as an in-house training (min. 5 persons). The training can be run as a one-day or two-day course, depending on the individual needs of our clients. The training may be run in German, English and Spanish.

About the instructor:
This training will be delivered by Dr. Lisa Ringhofer. Lisa is the Co-Founder of TripleMinds and has over 15 years of extensive participatory field experience in development cooperation and research. She holds an M.A. in Development Studies, an MBA and a PhD in Sociology/Social Ecology. Lisa has developed, monitored and evaluated development programmes and projects in several countries across the globe. She speaks German, English, Spanish and Portuguese.
